THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING WITH MWNF
The Learn with MWNF project is intended to facilitate the use of the virtual museum as a teaching aid, allowing students to acquire intellectual techniques and skills that enable them to learn from the exhibits, taking advantage of their communication skills to talk about people and societies from the past. Essentially, it is intended to “teach students how to learn from the museum” in an active, hands-on manner, making the exhibits vehicles for cultural meanings, ideas and concepts.
One of the basic tasks that the students undertake as part of the learning / researching process is observing and identifying the exhibits. The importance of this lies in the fact that the exhibits come from different countries and different periods, and as a result they are not always easy to identify. The ability to zoom in on the images and to consult the database are useful tools that can help with this process.
Comparing exhibits with each other and identifying their similarities and differences allows students to group the objects meaningfully, so that they can later link each object or group of objects with the social or cultural functions that they fulfilled. Again, students should be encouraged to consult the database systematically in order to resolve problems or answer questions that arise.
The final objective is for the students to learn to understand the objects in their natural context so that they can see how the people who made and used them lived and thought. Students will learn the “language of objects”. Thus, historical objects “display” or represent uses, customs and beliefs from other societies, and students will be able to compare their experiences with the modern world.
Each of the activities offers different theoretical content and some practical tasks that may be completed by consulting the temporary exhibitions mentioned.
Where would you put me?
What object is missing?
Which is the odd-one-out?
What is it for?
What do they have in common?
These are just a few of possibilities that Learn with MWNF can offer, but it is up to you to develop new opportunities to learn from the different concepts and themes available, or to introduce new ones. A blog has been set up in the virtual museum to allow you to share your experiences with other teaching centres throughout the Mediterranean region.
