Blue glass bottle with wheel-cut decoration
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (Sharjah)
Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation
Hegira 4th – 5th century / AD 10th – 11th century
SM 2006 - 1051
Iraq or Western Iran
This blue bottle has a facetted neck and a honey-comb-patterned body, accentuated by a stepped shoulder and base. The striking allover pattern was achieved by grinding out the slightly concave cavities with a specially designed cutting wheel. Vessels with this type of wheel-cut decoration mark continue pre-Islamic traditions.
