Lidded brass jug inlaid with silver
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (Sharjah)
Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation
Hegira 6th – early 7th century / AD 12th – early 13th century
SM 1996 – 109
Eastern Iran, Khurasan
This facetted sheet metal jug is a typical example of the Khurasan school of metalwork. It has been hammered into shape, before having its body incised and partly silver-inlaid. The decorative scheme combines benedictory Arabic inscriptions with figural cartouches showing sphinxes – cosmic and solar symbols in Persian popular culture – and birds.
