Date of Object:

Hegira 4th century / AD 10th century

Museum Inventory Number:

SM 1996 – 102

Period / Dynasty

Samanid

Provenance:

Iran, probably Nishapur

Description:

This earthenware bowl was covered in a dark brown slip before receiving an as yet unread, white floriated kufic inscription – possibly containing blessings. The secondary motifs evoking a textured background and rim, may suggest that the bowl was inspired by a metal prototype. Vessels like this have been associated with Nishapur and Afrasiyab.
