About Museum of Islamic Art, Doha

Date of Object:

Hegira 890 / AD 1485-1586

Museum Inventory Number:

MS.255

Provenance:

Iran

Description:

This copy of the famous Shahnama of Firdausi, probably from Shiraz, contains 73 illustrations of the glorious history of the kings of Persia. This copy can be dated from the 15th century since the preface refers to Baysunghurm, one of the Timurid princes. The date of AH 790 (AD 1387) was given probably to age the manuscript but the preface provides enough information to situate the book in the Timurid period.
