About The David Collection, Copenhagen
Hegira 3rd–4th century / AD 9th–10th century
Inv.no. 3/1971
Colorless glass, with relief-cut decoration in a green overlay (modern neck)
Abbasid
Iraq or Iran
The decoration was made by cutting away the outer layer of glass. The pattern, characteristic of early Abbasid art, was first developed for stucco reliefs that decorated buildings in the capital of Samarra. The bottle’s stylized birds and entwined, abstract vegetal ornaments are motifs that frequently appear in the art of the period.
